DIY: robe or cover-up or kaftan? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

About a year ago I was super pregnant helping a friend shop for a wedding she was in. I was all “good thing I’m pregnant, I’m not tempted to buy anything because nothing fits.” Literally 5 minutes later, I found something…

Over the past year this linen striped robe thing has been a go-to in my wardrobe, it’s so comfy. It’s light and airy which makes it a great option for warmer months instead of something like a cardigan. Also, it’s basically one-size-fits-all so it fit during and after pregnancy, not to mention that it’s a great cover-up for breastfeeding.

Obviously I wear it a lot, so when I saw this embroidered denim fabric at my local fabric store, I knew exactly what I was going to do with it.

I swear I was smiling.

I am not really sure what to call it. It’s kinda a robe, it’s kinda a cover-up, and it’s kinda like a kaftan, except that it’s not. Anyway, whatever it is, it was super easy to make and it’s my new favorite thing. It is literally four rectangles (two front panels, collar, and back) and some pockets.

The design is simple, but there are a few key features that I think are important…

  1. The sleeves (they are not real sleeves) – when I first

    key features

made it, the armholes were bigger, this resulted in more significant ‘sleeves’ which results in making you look wider than you actually are…which is not the look I am going for. So, by simply making the armholes smaller (from the bottom), it brings the sleeves in/down as well.

  2. POCKETS! I originally made this without pockets but after a week of wishing it had pockets I added some. It didn’t take long and they are so useful. This easy YouTube tutorial showed me how: https://www.youtube.com/

  3. The collar – it serves two purposes. It grounds the garment by adding some visual weight due to the darker color. And, it also adds physical weight since it is a heavier denim. This results in a stiffer collar for a touch of structure as well as some literal weight that helps the garment stay in place. Not to mention that the vertical lines have a flattering effect.

Given how easy it was to make, it’s highly likely this will not be the last of it’s kind…plus I have a few friends who are already hinting that they want one too 😉

P.S. I can’t wait for summer because BBQs, and friends, and this:
